The Bartender is a character in The Silver Case. He is the owner of Jack Hammer, and provides advice for Tokio Morishima throughout the Placebo storyline.

Appearance and Personality

The bartender is a kind and thoughtful man. He listens to Tokio's problems, and often gives sage advice, whether Tokio accepts it or not. He is trusting and once let Tokio stay behind at the bar after closing. He is homosexual and has a BDSM fetish. He used to be ashamed of this, but eventually accepted himself.

History

The Silver Case

The Bartender ran the bar Jack Hammer on Bluedahlia St. in Area C4 of Ward 24. He first met Tokio Morishima on April 10th, 1999. He believed Tokio had broken up with his girlfriend, and suggested that he start whittling, an idea which Tokio laughed off. Later on June 30th, they met again when Tokio told him he started carving a paper knife. On July 2nd, Tokio told him he had started whittling his second piece, a wooden turtle. Tokio also showed him a photo of Red, which he thought was "nasty". The following night, the bartender gave Tokio advice on how to sharpen a knife. On July 4th, Tokio complained to the bartender that nobody likes him, other than the bartender and Red.

On July 8th, the bartender gave Tokio a hint to solving a riddle sent by Hanao Hiseki. On July 25th, Tokio told him about how he solved all of the riddles, and went on a trip to Mikumo 77. The bartender assumed that he won a vacation from solving the riddles, and offered him a drink. On September 2nd, Tokio visited the bar again. The bartender commented that he looked exhausted, and Tokio complained about not understanding the younger generation. The bartender told him about the nature of journals on the Internet. The next day, Erika Yukawa visited the bar and spoke with the bartender. Tokio arrived and gave Erika one of the pomegranates that his mother had sent him. Some time later, Erika visited the bar again, and drank a Trinity cocktail.

On December 27th, Tokio visited the bar again after coming out of hiding. He asked if Tokio had gone on a trip somewhere, and mentioned that he didn't look sick, so he cooked Tokio an omelette to eat. The next day, Tokio had a Trinity cocktail at the bar, and the bartender told him about Erika's previous visit. He discussed how humans always try to seek perfection. He relayed his own experience of being homosexual, and having a BDSM fetish. He told Tokio that once he accepted himself, it purified his heart. Erika visited the bar once again, and the bartender told her that Tokio had returned. The next night, the bartender gave Tokio advice about whether to face his problems or run away, saying that he would bet on whatever Tokio chooses to do. Just before midnight on December 31st, Tokio woke up at the bar with a note from the bartender. The note asked him to lock up when he left, and throw the key back through the door. It also said that it would be fine to run from his problem, since running once or twice in life is good.

The 25th Ward

Some time later, Tokio returned to the bar and met the Hostess, who said the bartender sold Jackhammer to her, and it was renamed to Bar Sumire. He left the wooden turtle carving with the Hostess, and said that if someone named Morishima ever showed up, to give it to him. This was later revealed to be an illusion, and in reality the bar was decayed and abandoned.

The bartender later appeared in one of Tokio's memories from *05 MISOGI, where he visited the bar to order a Trinity cocktail, and give the wooden turtle to the bartender.
