Hatoba is a character in The 25th Ward: The Silver Case. He is the chief of the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit.

History

Backstory

Hatoba is the chief of the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit. He was said to have worked with Michiru Kosaka and Daikichi Sakaguchi on some criminal investigations in the past. In #06 white out, he was told by Tetsugoro Kusabi to take Mokutaro Shiroyabu into his care. Hatoba assigned Shiroyabu to be Shinko Kuroyanagi's partner.

The 25th Ward

Hatoba first appears in #01 new world order, meeting Kosaka for the first time in years. He asks Kosaka how he's been, and wonders if he is adjusting well to working as a bureaucrat. He asks Kosaka about rumors of an administrative officer who is putting together a team, but Kosaka feigns ignorance. After the incident at the Bayside Towerland apartments, Hatoba met with Kosaka again. He mentions the mysterious deaths around the 25th Ward, and that the Postal Federation is behind it. He questions Kosaka's role in the conspiracy, and asks why he didn't kill him earlier. Kosaka tells him that he'll avoid killing him for now until he becomes stronger, and reveals that the Ministry of International Trade and Industry is going to use the power of execution to change the laws of the country, and that the HC Unit will be destroyed. The two part ways, looking forward to their eventual duel.

black out

Hatoba appears in #07 black out, shown to have survived his duel with Kosaka. He stood in front of Kosaka's dead body, questioning what Kosaka was trying to do. Aoyama and Akama appear, saying they were listening in. Hatoba tells them to dispose of the body, but the two instead hold Hatoba at gunpoint. Hatoba reacted in disbelief to their strange behavior. After Kuroyanagi arrived to defend Hatoba, the three entered a stand-off. They agreed to allow Uehara to choose the outcome of the fight.

• No. 1, "Kill Hatoba": Killed by Uehara.
• No. 11, "Kill everyone (excluding yourself)": Killed by Uehara.
• No. 12, "Kill everyone (including yourself)": Killed by Uehara, and guided by Shiroyabu to the observation room.
• No. 13, "Cut off Hatoba's arm and kill Akama": Hatoba's arms are cut off and he can't move.
• No. 14, "Cut off Hatoba's head and crush Kuroyanagi's heart": Decapitated by Uehara.
• No. 15, "Shoot out Hatoba's kneecaps and stomp his immobile ass": Killed by Uehara. Kuroyanagi confirms his corpse, and leaves.
• No. 16, "Bite off all of Hatoba's fingers and kill Aoyama": Fingers bitten off by Uehara.
• No. 17, "Grab Hatoba by the throat and knee him into a KO": Knocked out by Uehara, who is chased to the ocean by Kuro. Hatoba appears and drags Uehara underwater.
• No. 18, "Explode": Blown away by Uehara's explosion.
• No. 24, "Face off against Hatoba": Hatoba and Uehara agree to a duel. They go to meet in another location underground, where Uehara finds Hatoba dead along with a strange little girl.
• No. 25, "Face off against Aoyama": Hatoba is killed in a duel with Akama.
• No. 26, "Face off against Akama": Hatoba and Kuroyanagi leave.
• No. 32, "Wonder whether Shiroyabu is alive or dead and fire one shot to check": Decapitated by Red Shiroyabu.
• No. 41, "Kosaka lives": Shot dead by Kosaka.
• No. 61, "Target Kuroyanagi's ears": Killed by Shiroyabu.
• No. 83, "Kurumizawa appears in an illustration": Everyone is turned 2D by Kurumizawa. The group engage in a pay-to-win battle which destroys the 25th Ward.
• No. 85, "Kurumizawa appears in a polygonal body": Everyone is killed by Kurumizawa's overpowering presence.
• No. 89, "Patricia appears": A woman named Patricia appears and convinces everyone to stop fighting.

Official profiles

Heinous Crimes Unit Chief. Due to his position as chief, he possesses uncanny knowledge of all sorts of subjects, and approaches cases from a variety of viewpoints. Seems to have some kind of special relationship with Kuroyanagi, but details are unknown. (#25 artbook description)
