Aoyama is a character in The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, and is also prominently featured in Red, Blue, and Green. He is a member of the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit, but is in reality a time-traveling police officer.

Appearance and Personality

Aoyama appears to be a normal middle-aged man, and is always wearing a suit. His typical appearance, however, is a disguise, and he dons futuristic clothing when he acts as a time-traveling cop. He is described as "bald" by Akama, something which he himself disputes. As the time-traveler Bruno San Marino, he sports a mohawk and large sunglasses.

Not much is shown of Aoyama's personality since he appears for a short period of time in The 25th Ward. He seems to be a competent detective, although he isn't afraid to speak his mind, and is seen criticizing Shinko Kuroyanagi's foul mouth. He is close with his partner Akama, who both think of the other HCU members as their friends. Aoyama's allegiance is unclear, since he acts both as a detective for the HCU, and as a scout for Kosuke Kurumizawa. Both of these may in-fact be him simply acting on orders from his true employer. Aoyama is often a comedic character, breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge future events, and his own status as a supporting character.

History

Backstory

Very little is known about Aoyama's origin. He is said to be a time-cop from another place in space-time, sent to the 25th Ward with Akama to carry out a mission. At one point the two joined the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit. He seemed to simultaneously be working for Kosuke Kurumizawa, scouting members for his Union organization.

The 25th Ward

Aoyama first appears in #02 good looking guy, working as part of the investigation into the death of Yasushi Kamijo. He and Akama were tasked with digging up information from Kamijo's workplace, and were introduced to the new member, Uehara.

Aoyama would not appear again until the beginning of #05 electride, being briefed by Hatoba on the death of Yuki Ishimura, who may have a connection to the divers and Kurumizawa. He and Akama were given orders to look into the identity of the victim.

Red, Blue, and Green

Aoyama is one of the main characters of Red, Blue, and Green. He first appears in Red Out, meeting with Akama at the Union Hotel during the events of #05 electride. They discuss Akama's orders to eliminate Mokutaro Shiroyabu. They agree that he has become to dangerous and has to be dealt with, despite him being their friend. Akama agreed to go after Shiro, and Aoyama went after Hatoba.

In Blue Out, Aoyama meets with Hatoba, claiming to have been sent by Akama to protect him. He broke the fourth wall to bemoan his status as a supporting character with very few lines. He criticized Hatoba for putting Akama in danger, and swore that if Akama gets killed, he would go after him. He then called Midori Midorikawa, telling her that she had a job at Room 303 of the hotel, where Shiroyabu was said to be staying. He then called Kurumizawa to inform him about the job. He asked for a car to be sent for him, and said he was going to check on Shiro.

In Green Out, it was shown that Aoyama was the one who scouted Midorikawa for Union. He noticed her at a train station after one of her cleanings, and said that he could smell blood on her. At the end of the story, Kurumizawa speaks to Aoyama, telling him that the cleaning is over, and to make contact. Aoyama asked if he could visit Kurumizawa in the tropics, and he agreed.

black out

Aoyama and Akama appeared once again in #07 black out, immediately following the shootout between Hatoba and Michiru Kosaka. They said that they were listening in, and asked what was going on. Hatoba told them to dispose of the body, but the two instead held Hatoba at gunpoint. They went on to make jokes about the film Taken, a movie from the future. They claimed to be executioner-cops sent there by their boss. After Shinko Kuroyanagi arrived to defend Hatoba, the three entered a stand-off. They agreed to allow Uehara to choose the outcome of the fight.

Travis Strikes Again

Following the destruction of the 25th Ward, Aoyama and Akama were sent to the United States until their next destination was decided. Aoyama appears alongside Akama in #1: Absolute Zero, using the name Bruno San Marino. They stop Travis Touchdown on the road and explain that their mission is to inform Travis of the "connecting points" to the Death Balls. They tell him to head to Nightmare Burger where he'll meet Uehara. When Travis asks why the 25th Ward disappeared, they explain that it was destroyed in a "man-made natural disaster" called the Rage Earth Plan, which Aoyama calls a "genocide". They joke about hitching a ride with Travis next time, and teleport away.

Trivia

  • Aoyama shares a name with Kou Aoyama, an original playable character created for BLOOD+ One Night Kiss.
  • Bruno San Marino is named after the Italian-American professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.
