Ryu Munakata is a character in The Silver Case. He is a detective with the Central Police Department, but behind the scenes, he is the leader of the TRO. He is described as a "Death-filing Special Agent", and is connected to the Shelter Kids Policy. He often leaks confidential information to his friend Tetsugoro Kusabi.

Appearance and Personality

Munakata has a laid-back personality, almost never taking anything seriously. Despite his role as a government official, he seems to let sensitive information leak easily if it is able to help the Heinous Crimes Unit. He has a friendship with Tetsugoro Kusabi, and the two speak very casually. He is seen going out of his way to avoid Kusabi being killed.

History

Backstory

Ryu Munakata is secretly the head of the TRO, and was one of the three men with knowledge of the truth behind the Silver Case, alongside Tetsugoro Kusabi and Shinji Kotobuki. Munakata was also involved in the planning of Project Elbow, the code-word for the Ayame Maspro portion of the Shelter Kids Policy. Munakata is an expert in the technique of death-filing, a special kind of profiling that involves crossing the line between life and death.

The Silver Case

Munakata first appears at the beginning of case#1:decoyman at the Harakiri Batting Center, where he tells Kusabi that he suspects that Kamui Uehara is going to re-appear. He appears again at the end of case#4:kamuidrome, telling Kusabi that after the launch of Method Tank, he was the one that dished out punishment to Oldman and Neutral. He then warned again that Kamui was going to appear, and that Munakata's faction was going to smoke-out the remnants of the FSO.

Munakata plays a larger role in the events of case#5:lifecut. On November 29th, he told Kusabi about the appearance of TRUMP, and their possible connection to the government. He also alluded to the TRO and CCO working together to stop something from coming to the surface. After Kusabi left, he was confronted by a hitman, who told him he said too much. Munakata managed to kill the hitman and survive.

On December 24th he met with Kusabi again, who couldn't believe that he was alive. Kusabi informed him that he killed Kotobuki, and Munakata told him that the FSO was using Kamui to disturb the balance between the TRO and CCO to seize power. Munakata said they should just do as they please, which resulted in Kusabi going after TRUMP. Later that day, he met with Morichika Nakategawa, who threatened him for information. Munakata said that Kusabi was going to the TV Tower, after following Morikawa. Naka prepared to shoot Munakata, who criticized him for ruining the lives of the girls involved in the Ayame Maspro project. Naka also revealed that he had signed the draft for Project Elbow that Munakata had written. Before Naka could shoot, Munakata managed to kill him. Kenta Mikoshiba appeared, who had been working together with Munakata. He suggested that they kill Kusabi, after which Munakata shot him.

On December 25th, Kusabi and Munakata met up again, and discussed how Akira had become the new Kamui. After this, it is implied that Kusabi and Munakata had a shootout, since Kusabi is shown covered in blood immediately after.

The 25th Ward

In the following years, Munakata became confined to a wheelchair, possibly due to his showdown with Kusabi. In #06 white out on February 28, 2003, he met with Michiru Kosaka to discuss the appearance of a new TRUMP member, the Joker. He also caught up with Kosaka, talking about Kosaka's recent break-up with Sakura Natsume. After asking about the whereabouts of Kusabi, Kosaka said that they were unknown, and that he may be dead. Munakata assured that Kusabi was definitely still alive. At some point later, Munakata started to mentor Mokutaro Shiroyabu on the secrets of death-filing.

Despite being listed as dead in *00 UTSUTSU, Munakata was still alive in 2005 in the Evildiver University Hospital. He appears in #03 boys don't cry, now rendered bedridden from his failing body. Shiroyabu approached him after having to face the Okiai hitmen. He asked Munakata about Kosuke Kurumizawa, and Munakata explained the true nature of Kamui. He warned Shiroyabu not to death-file, which he refused. Munakata advised him to go to a certain place and never come back to him, after which Shiroyabu called him a pitiful man, and left.

Trivia

  • Munakata has a portrait in The Silver Case's manual and files, but it is never used in-game.
  • According to Suda, Kusabi and Munakata fought at the end of case#5:lifecut.
