Heaven Smiles
This page is about the enemy and its variants, the Heaven Smiles. This (currently) does not cover the history of the Smiles or the terrorist group of a similar name, the latter which you can visit at Heaven Smile.
Heaven Smiles (ヘヴンスマイル, Hevunsumairu) are the main threats faced in killer7. They appear in every level of the game, including as multiple variants and bossfights, particularly in the Vinculum Gate.
Appearance and Personality
The typical normal Heaven Smile is humanoid in appearance, with varying degrees of skin colour and texture, but is commonly depicted with a red/purple skin with paint splatter patterns. Their mouths are stuck in an inhuman, open-mouth smile, hence their name, with eyes comprised of dark red sclera and white irises.
Abilities
All Heaven Smiles carry two abilities: They are invisible to the naked human eye, only revealed by the Vision Ring in game, and they are hardwired to attack their target, usually anyone nearby, and kill them by blowing themselves up. According to Iwazaru, the latter is achieved by the bombs within their bodies. Some Smile Variants possess extra abilities to get to their targets more efficiently or defend themselves from attackers. Default Heaven Smiles that are shot at while invisible will start to run at you, indicated by a small laugh.
Creation Methods
Heaven Smiles can come from three different origins:
- Humans turned into Smiles via the God Hand
- Created via flesh/organs, supplied by various organ traders such as Curtis Blackburn
- Duplicated by Duplicator or Mother Smiles
There are no differences between the Smiles created by any of these methods, but Duplicator and Mother Smiles seem to be limited to producing typical Heaven Smiles.
Variants
The following are listed in order of appearance in game, including Vinculum Gate Smiles, and cover every named variant of the Heaven Smile.
Camellia
Indicated by their iconic red-on-white pattern and constant jittering, Camellia Smiles remain stationary until shot, where they will attempt to flee while screaming. If you successfully kill them before they kill themselves or hit their weakpoint, you are rewarded with lots of Thick Blood.
Camellias are considered traitors to Kun Lan and the Heaven Smile organisation, which is pointed out by Iwazaru, and may have once been humans turned into Camellias by Kun for their actions.
Duplicator
The second biggest variant of Smile, succeeded only by Giant, Duplicators infest various areas in order to produce more Egg/Heaven Smiles to ‘clamp down’ on areas of interest. They have large yellow weakpoints (or red on Deadly/Killer8 difficulty) of varying numbers, which need to be shot at to kill them. Dan Smith’s Charge Shot and Coyote’s Charge Shot (yellow weakpoints only) can take these out in one hit.
Egg
Produced by Duplicator and Mother Smiles. Roll towards the target, but hatches into a fully grown Heaven Smile when close or shot.
Micro
The smallest Smile. Has two canisters on its back and abnormally large hands for its tiny size. It will idle in circles until it notices you, where it will let out a high pitched laugh, fly towards you, and if not taken out, blind you for a brief period. Thankfully, it can be taken out in one shot, and depending on what colour it is, it can grant two different rewards to the player. If Yellow and Black, it will fully heal all Smiths and awaken any personalities still asleep. If Blue and Red, it will give a large amount of Thick Blood.
Runner
A variant of the Heaven Smile that runs instead of walks. Can be identified by their small laugh they let out with every step.
Speed
Exclusive to Target00: Angel’s Vinculum Gate, the Speed Smile violently jerks its head around to avoid having its weakspot hit. This is countered by shooting its body to stun it, allowing a window to shoot it much more easily.
Bombhead
Has a cage-like device on its head that opens and closes periodically, accompanied by a short laugh. If you get a headshot while the cage is open, it will die as if you shot its weakpoint. If closed, it will instantly explode and not reward any blood. You can shoot off its limbs like any other Smile, however. Bombheads deal much more damage than typically Smiles upon exploding, and should be killed before they get close.
Spiral
The Smile furthest from a human form. Simply a ball with lots of faces down the middle, Spirals roll forth slowly with an annoying jingle and can only be killed by shooting their real head, indicated by a green outline around it.
Flower
Similar in function to a Camellia, but aggressive. Gives lots of Thin Blood on defeat.
Another
A Heaven Smile that crawls on the ceiling until close or shot, where it then crawl-runs towards you on all fours. Can be defeated like a normal Heaven Smile.
Phantom
Dark red in colouration. Instantly teleports to you and explodes if hit, unless you hit its weak point, typically an enlarged feature like a hand or head, which instantly kills it.
Diver
Drops down via rocket, before becoming a normal Smile.
Poison
Armoured and with a purple aura. Will always rise back up if not killed via its weakpoint. Even MASK de Smith’s grenades can’t put this monster down!
Mother
A grey Smile with elongated arms, tentacles and a large weakpoint. Similar in function to a Duplicator, where it endlessly produces Egg/Heaven Smiles. Unlike the Duplicator, shooting the Mother Smile outside of its weak point will prompt it to move forward and kill you.
Backside
Red with no legs and donning black, sharp armour, Backside Smiles are invulnerable in the front, but weak in the back. Shoot either of its large arm pieces thrice (if it starts floating towards you while you do so, you’ll have to start again) to turn it around and reveal its yellow weakspot.
Ulmeyda
Not to be confused with Andrei Ulmeyda or his Heaven Smile form. Exclusive to Target02: Cloudman, this is a passive Heaven Smile that runs about with a Texas Bronco T-Shirt. Gives coins and Thin Blood by shooting its shirt. Turns into a normal Smile if you hit anything else.
Giant
Another Target02: Cloudman exclusive, the Giant Smile is an enormous Heaven Smile with only one eye. Unkillable, unless you manage to shoot it’s singular, blinking eye. Falls over and explodes when close enough.
Protector/Protector Z/Protector ZZ
Heavily armoured and slow, Protector Smiles are abnormally muscular and wonky Smiles that can only be defeated by MASK de Smith. Protector Smiles can be taken out with normal grenades; however, Protector Z Smiles need MASK’s Shock Shells to defeat them, and ZZ Smiles need his Focus Shells, both requiring some Thin Blood to achieve.
Broken
Strapped to a jet of some description, Broken Smiles are fast and hard to hit, but thankfully can be shot down with a quick enough trigger finger.
Ceramic
Exclusive to one room in Target03: Encounter, rather unusually not in Vinculum Gate, the Ceramic Smile is a heavily armoured Smile whose only weakpoint is his heart right in the middle of his chest. However, if he sees you, he’ll turn around and run the other way. Running up to him will result in instant death. Aim well and you’ll get himself heart with ease. A cool trick is that looking away for a bit as the Ceramic Smile approaches lets him get closer than when you’re looking, giving you a bigger area to hit thanks to his closeness. Don’t look away for too long; he’ll run right up to you and explode.
Mithril
Introduced in Target03: Encounter Part 1’s Vinculum Gate, Mithril Smiles have body armour preventing a typical kill; you must hit its weakpoint to kill it. If you’re really desperate, you can break its armour to get a normal kill, albeit it will run at you.
Laser
Laser Smiles are very deadly; shooting a beam of light that deals lethal damage to most Smiths (assuming you aren’t wearing the Power Ring). First encountered in Target03: Encounter Part 2’s Vinculum Gate, Laser Smiles charge up their attack for a small period before unleashing their attack. Shoot it down first to avoid the damage. Or, if you have good reaction speed, avoid it entirely by dodging![1]
Roller
Exclusive to Target04: Alter Ego, Roller Smiles look like any other Smile until spotting you, where it will curl up into a o shape, holding its ankles with its hands, and speed towards you. These are much faster than Broken or Micro Smiles but carry the same sized hitbox and weakpoints of a normal Heaven Smile. They share the same colour and texture palettes as normal Heaven Smiles.
Timer
Exclusive to Target05: Smile, Part 1’s Vinculum Gate, the Timer Smile is a green-grey smile covered in red bumps of varying sizes. To defeat it, simply pop all of the bumps as it slowly moves towards you. However, when only one bump remains, it will suddenly charge at you, flailing its arms. It is recommended to leave a bigger bump as the final target to make it easier to kill.
Galactic Tomahawk
Exclusive to Target05: Smile, Part 2’s Vinculum Gate, the Galactic Tomahawk constantly shoots out missiles at its target instead of running at them. These missiles can be shot down, but it does not help defeat the Smile. You can gun down the Smile with anyone you please, including Garcian (but only on Normal)[2], though MASK’s Iron Mask upgrade and Dan’s Charge Shot deal with it the quickest.
It is orange/yellow in appearance. It has a normal Heaven Smile fused with a pile of, presumably deceased, Smiles below its hips. It does not move.
Black
Exclusive to Target05: Smile, Part 2. Cannot take any form of damage, except from the Golden Gun. In the Greg Nightmare fight, 7 are summoned, each one picking off a Smith, until Garcian Smith is brought out and kills the last one with the Golden Gun. In Killer8 difficulty, the last one goes after young Harman Smith instead.
It is bulky and completely black in appearance, excluding its eyes and teeth, walking slowly to its target unlike its shambling, running, crawling or stationary siblings.
