Kaiji Enzawa is a character in The Silver Case. He is a businessman who is secretly working for a syndicate. He serves as the antagonist of the Placebo storyline, harassing Tokio Morishima under the name "The Bat".
Appearance and Personality
Enzawa appears to be a normal man in his fifties, but secretly holds contempt for the people around him. He views Ayame as a perfect being, who is able to surpass Kamui. He is ruthless, and willing to kill anyone who gets in the way of his goals.
History
Background
Enzawa was the administrator of the Shelter Kids Policy, overseeing the development of the Kamui and Ayame stock. After this he became an intense believer in Ayame, and began working for the syndicates of Ward 24 while keeping track of how the children grew. He realized the plan of Nezu to release Kamui into Ward 24, and decided to back Ayame against him.
The Silver Case
Enzawa began working for one of the syndicates trying to prevent Kamui's return. One of his employers began posing as S. Inohana, and tasked him with spying on Tokio Morishima. On April 9th, 1999, he emailed Akira, warning him to stay away from what he was investigating, and that he was watching him. He referred to Akira as "Chinchilla', a nickname that had been given to him by Tetsugoro Kusabi. Inohana set up a meeting between him and Tokio at the cafe Prussian. Enzawa told Tokio that he had seen Kamui at the Babylon Shopping Center five days prior. He described Kamui as looking like a "new moon", and said that Kamui's crimes are like works of art. On April 14th, Tokio called Enzawa and asked to meet regarding Ayame Shimohira. Enzawa asked Tokio what he thought of Kamui after his apparent encounter with him at Babylon. He told Tokio about his belief in Ayame, and that her ability to have children is important. He informed Tokio about Ayame's motive in the murder of the three women, and that she had been arrested. The next day, Enzawa interrupted the online chat between Tokio and Erika Yukawa, telling him to stop investigating, and that Kamui was sleeping inside him. On September 3rd, Enzawa emailed Tokio again, warning him to stay away from Kamui Net and the Heinous Crimes Unit. On September 7th, Enzawa murdered Slash, who had been hired by Tokio to track him. The next day, he emailed Tokio about Slash's fate, and warned that he was next. After Tokio tried to lure out The Bat, Enzawa called him and set up a meeting, claiming to have a message from Inohana. The two met at the former Hitakatsu switchyard, where Enzawa revealed that he was The Bat. He told him the truth behind his client, and about his devotion to Ayame. He tried to shoot Tokio, but was instead shot in the head by an assassin sent by Nezu.
Enzawa remained as a lingering consciousness inside the mind of Tokio. On December 30th, Enzawa spoke through an email that Tokio had sent to himself. He described the feeling of being shot, and his motivation for working against Nezu. He expressed sorrow for never being able to see Ayame face-to-face.
The 25th Ward: The Silver Case
*05 MISOGI again showed Enzawa as one of the lingering consciousnesses in Tokio's mind after he returned to the 24th Ward. He appeared in the third-floor bathroom of Babylon, alongside Ayame and Kei Nanami. He said that he wanted to pass on to the afterlife, and wished Tokio would die so he could escape.
