Toriko Kusabi is a character who was first mentioned in The Silver Case and later appeared in Flower, Sun, and Rain. She is the daughter of detective Tetsugoro Kusabi and a junior high school student staying in Room 405 of the Flower, Sun, and Rain hotel, with her pet crocodile Christina. The player assumes her role for several brief moments in the game, as she follows the path of Sumio Mondo.

Appearance and Personality

Toriko is a mysterious young girl with black hair, wearing a white dress. In the live-action opening for the game, she is seen in other outfits. She has an eccentric personality, and is constantly worried about where Chris has gone. She seems to have little patience with certain people who get in her way or waste her time. She loves Chris and thinks he's cute, despite Chris hating his own name. She has knowledge of the true nature of Kamui Uehara, which she likely learned from her father. She views Mondo as their savior, who will throw open the world of the island.

History

Backstory

Toriko Kusabi was born to Tetsugoro Kusabi and his wife Akemi. She was raised in Kanto, eventually adopting a pet crocodile named Christina.

Flower, Sun, and Rain

In 2001, Toriko and her father went on vacation to Lospass Island, with the purpose of recovering her father's friend Sumio Kodai, now living under the personality of the searcher Sumio Mondo. Toriko appears in a series of vignettes after each Request, which seem to take place some amount of time after each story:

  • Request 01: Gymnopédie#1: Toriko first appears sleeping in her room as Christina escapes out the door. She chases him down the hallway and passes by Sundance Shot, who she says is an evil man. She asks Chris where he's going, as he stopped outside of Mondo's room.
  • Request 02: Air in G: Chris takes off again, and Toriko runs past Mati Sding. Mati tells her not to run in the hallway, and she says she was chasing her pet. Mati says that trotting in the hallways is fine.
  • Request 04: 'S Wonderful: Toriko meets Maria Nicharesuk in the 2nd floor stairwell. Maria says she hasn't seen Chris, and offers Toriko a drink of milk, which she was drinking after being tired from flying.
  • Request 06: Air in G: Toriko meets Stephan Charbonie right outside the hotel. When asked where Chris went, Stephan believes she is referring to a football player named Chris. He rambles on about football until she gives up.
  • Request 07: Children's corner: Toriko kicks a ball sent at her by Shoutaro Kai. Shoutaro tries to pick a fight with her, and questions why Chris is pink.
  • Request 08: Ave Maria: Toriko chases Chris by the church, where Seiji Fujieda and Yuuri Otowaya are getting married. She congratulates them, and they say they're happy to have her blessing.
  • Request 09: Rhapsody in Blue: Toriko chases Chris to Power Beach, where she meets Ken Sakurabi. He promises to tell her where Chris is if he spots him on his route, but doesn't know where to find Toriko to tell her.
  • Request 10: I Love You, Porgy: Toriko finds Chris in Mati's diner, walking in circles in front of Daizaburo Kai. She says that Chris seems to like him. Kai says that was fine and that he finds Chris pleasant.
  • Request 11: Clair de Lune: Toriko loses track of Chris, who lets out a cry from the top of the hotel's sign, as if to mourn Mondo's death.

After Request 12: I Got Rhythm, Toriko caught up to Chris outside of the Business Tower lighthouse. He said that he ran off because she gave him a stupid name, which doesn't fit with him being male. Chris told her that Sundance Shot was at the top of the lighthouse, and that he had been following him. Toriko confronted Sundance, and said that she was there to kill him like he killed Mondo. Toriko said she was going to save Mondo, and accused Sundance of being Kamui Uehara, who he claimed to not know.

After Request 13: La fille aux cheveux de lin, Toriko appeared on the roof of the hotel, confronting Sundance as he prepared to shoot Mondo again. She asked Sundance why he had to shoot, and questioned his philosophy. Toriko said that if Mondo dies, then he would disappear too. The two make a pact that if Mondo can find him, she'll win, and if he doesn't then both Sundance and Mondo will disappear. She agrees and Mondo is shown shooting himself to move forward to the next day. Toriko asks Chris if he thinks Mondo is really their savior, and if he can throw open this world. She tells Mondo to wake up as she points to the exploding plane overhead.

Toriko doesn't appear again until Request 18: An American in Paris, when she confronts Sundance while he is disguised as Mondo in the Lospass Airport. She tells him that he is Kamui, and that Kamui moves among humans to kill them. He told her that a friend of her father's would be there soon to release him. The real Mondo appeared shortly after to verify his identity and unmask Sundance.
