Thunder Ryu is a middle-aged Japanese man. He is always dressed in a black business suit with slicked-back black hair. He wields D.O.S., a yellow-bladed beam katana resembling a shirasaya. As a Yakuza, Thunder Ryu has an intimidating personality, but sees potential in Travis and encourages him to keep fighting. He is skilled in sword-fighting and pro-wrestling moves, knowledge which he passes on to Travis through often homo-erotic training sessions.

Thunder Ryu later appears in Speed City and fights Speed Buster in a duel. Thunder Ryu is on the back foot, but when he gets distracted by Jeane, Speed Buster lands a blow that proves to be fatal. Thunder Ryu's last words were words of encouragement for Travis.

Thunder Ryu later appears in Speed City, fighting Speed Buster in a duel before Travis's arrival. Thunder Ryu is distracted by Jeane, and is killed by Speed Buster's laser. Thunder Ryu's last words were words of encouragement for Travis. Thunder Ryu's leftover beam katana was later used as the basis of Travis's Tsubaki Mk. III.

Despite being dead, Thunder Ryu's spirit still runs Thunder Ryu Bldg. and continues to train Travis. Later, when Travis is travelling through the Forest of Bewilderment, he ends up being guided by Thunder Ryu's spirit who tells Travis which direction to go before giving him a letter that acts as his final message to Travis before he fades away.
