}}Italic titleFlower, Sun, and Rain (Japanese: 花と太陽と雨と, Hepburn: Hana to Taiyō to Ame to) is an adventure game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Victor Interactive Software for the PlayStation 2 in May 2001. Written, directed and designed by Goichi Suda, it is the second main installment in the Kill the Past series.

Originally released exclusively in Japan, the game was remade for the Nintendo DS by h.a.n.d. under supervision by Grasshopper. The remake, which adds the subtitle "Murder and Mystery in Paradise" (Japanese: 終わらない楽園, Hepburn: Owaranai Rakuen; lit: "Endless Paradise") was published by Rising Star Games in Europe in 2008 and by Marvelous Entertainment in Japan and North America in 2008 and 2009 respectively. As of 2026, the original PlayStation 2 version remains exclusive to Japan.

The game is set on the secluded Micronesian island of Lospass and follows Sumio Mondo, a "searcher by trade" whose profession involves locating lost objects on behalf of clients by using a mysterious silver briefcase. After being contracted to stop a terorrist bombing, Mondo finds himself trapped in a time loop that repeatedly sends him to the morning of the disaster, during which he gets constantly distracted by the banal requests and minor incoveniences of the eccentric locals and strange guests of the titular hotel: Flower, Sun, and Rain.

Although not advertised as a sequel to The Silver Case, Flower, Sun, and Rain makes a few references to its predecessor and, ultimately, reveals itself to be a continuation of the game's events. Unlike its predecessor, Flower, Sun, and Rain features fully-explorable 3D environments.

Gameplay
Flower, Sun, and Rain is a 3D adventure game in which the player controls their character in open environments, talks to characters and examines objects. Although the player can generally move anywhere within a given map, the plot progression is highly linear and there is usually only one thing they must examine to move on, and areas unnecessary for the current chapter cannot be entered. The majority of interaction comes in the form of puzzles that protagonist Sumio Mondo must solve using his computer-briefcase Catherine. Catherine can be plugged in to various objects or even characters; upon successfully doing so, the player must enter a numerical code. Entering the correct code will solve the puzzle and allow the plot to move forward.

The majority of these puzzles are solved by locating the code within an in-game guidebook known as The Lospass which is issued to Mondo early in the game. Generally, the code is in the form of a number tangentially or directly related to the object Catherine is being jacked into. Hints as to what page they should look for can, and sometimes must, be found by talking to characters in the environment. There are also certain instances in the game in which you do not play as Sumio Mondo, or when Mondo does not have access to Catherine; at these times, there are no numeric puzzles to solve as Catherine is not present.
Summary
The game opens with its protagonist, Sumio Mondo, having arrived on Lospass Island. Mondo explains to the player that he is a "searcher" who has the ability to find almost anything with the help of his computer-briefcase, Catherine. His mission on Lospass Island is only his next in a long line, but at the onset, he is not aware of the details of his assignment. Over the course of the opening chapter of the game, Mondo makes his way to the Hotel Flower, Sun, and Rain, where he will be staying over the course of his time on the island, and meets his client, the hotel manager Edo Macalister.

Edo explains Mondo's mission to him: a terrorist is targeting the island, and has placed their bomb on a plane leaving from Lospass Airport. Sumio's job is to find the bomb before the plane takes off so it can be removed. However, he is also warned that Lospass Island is home to a "crazy magnetic field" that causes a "certain instance of time" to repeat eternally. Mondo finds himself confused by this idea, but agrees to do his best to find the bomb.

However, on his first day of searching, he finds himself sidetracked by a mischievous spirit that his trapped him in a room called the Sealed Space. By the time he manages to deal with the issue, he sees the plane fly through the sky and explode; he was too late. Soon after, though, Mondo wakes up on his first day once again and is instructed to reach the airport to find the bomb as soon as he can. Mondo finds himself seemingly repeating the same day over and over, each day making it a little bit closer to the airport, but always having to deal with other problems that prevent him from ever reaching it in time.

Parallel to this are small vignettes starring a young girl who is also staying in the hotel, Toriko Kusabi, attempting to catch up to her runaway pet alligator, Christina.
Connection to The Silver Case
Although not advertised as such, Flower, Sun, and Rain actually takes place in the same world as The Silver Case (informally known as "Kill the Past"). While signs of this can be spotted from the very beginning - familiar names like "Sumio", "Kusabi", etc. - attention is not called to these connections, leaving players who have not played The Silver Case unlikely to notice.

More concrete connections can be found in The Lospass, a guidebook provided to Mondo and the player by Edo Macalister. The Lospass explicitly mentions Ward 24 and Sayaka Baian, in contexts that match up with their appearances in The Silver Case.

The connections become more and more apparent the longer one goes into the game. By the halfway point and onwards, there are several explicit references in the main story, and knowledge of the events of The Silver Case becomes necessary to follow the plot. The conclusion of the game directly ties into The Silver Case and establishes Flower, Sun, and Rain as a sequel.

Development
Flower, Sun, and Rain began development after the release of The Silver Case. As a reaction to the dark, depressing setting of The Silver Case, Flower, Sun, and Rain was given a light-hearted tone and took place in a bright, tropical setting, becoming a sort of opposite of The Silver Case. The numeric puzzles were designed to add thematic consistency to the work and resonate with Mondo's character, as opposed to the puzzles of The Silver Case which all used different systems. Most staff members from The Silver Case returned to work on Flower, Sun, and Rain. A Japanese DVD of "Anata no Tameni", the game's intro song, features early computer graphic mockups of characters and areas with a completely different style. The idea to reuse characters in very different ways was inspired by manga artist Osamu Tezuka, who used a technique known as his "Star System" to cast the same characters as different roles in different works. Despite this, Flower, Sun, and Rains returning characters from other works are the same characters in-universe.

The game's intro was filmed in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, with a production team with as little as 10 tasked with creating the video. According to Goichi Suda, the videographers did not seem to hold games as a medium in a high regard, resulting in a poor experience on sight.

Along with the game, a companion book known as the Flower, Sun, and Rain Official Fan Book was released. This book contained a replica of the in-game book The Lospass, as well as walkthroughs, character profiles, art and comments on the story.
Murder and Mystery in Paradise
The 2008 DS port, Murder and Mystery in Paradise, was developed based on Suda's desire to see his pre-killer7 games released overseas. Suda and Grasshopper were not directly involved with the porting process, however. Due to the limitations of the DS, the graphical quality had to be lowered drastically to release it on the system, and a new version of the soundtrack had to be created. The game was not popular in the west due to these issues, as well as the fact that the plot relied on knowledge of The Silver Case, which would not be translated for several more years.

Some extra features were added to the DS port, such as the ability to open Catherine at any point of the game instead of only when a puzzle presents itself. Catherine's menu was also given new features such as a notepad and a "Goods" menu, which allows the player to peruse character and jack-in target profiles (the former being the same as those in the Official Fan Book). A number of optional puzzles, known as Lost and Found, were added to the game. Jack-in targets for these were hidden around most chapters, and a memo found at the beginning of each chapter gave the puzzles required to solve each input. Solving a Lost and Found puzzle rewarded you with its corresponding item, available to view in the Goods menu. An X Search System was added to the game allowing the player to more easily locate these items. Unlocking large amounts of items (among other feats) rewards the player with costumes for Sumio Mondo that can be worn using the closet in his room.

The scripts between the initial European release and the US release of the DS version are slightly different. In most cases, this is just grammar and terminology changes, i.e. changing "lorry" to "truck", or changing the spelling of characters' names to alternate romanizations. In one case late in the game, an explicit mention of a character being gay was altered to be more ambiguous ("batting for the other team").

Further re-release
It was announced at Hopper's 5 that Flower, Sun, and Rain, along with killer7, would receive ports or remasters at some point in the future.

On July 27, 2026, a fan-made translation of the PS2 version to English using the DS script was published.

}}Mokutaro Shiroyabu is a detective of the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit and one of the central characters of the Correctness storypoint of The 25th Ward: The Silver Case. He also appears in 25 of the 2017 edition of The Silver Case, and Romeo is a Dead Man.

Personality
Shiroyabu is a reckless and overconfident cop. As a Central Police Department officer, he shows enthusiasm to the concept of dying in the line of duty, tries to shoot Akira based on presumption and shows fanboyism towards Tetsugoro Kusabi. As an HC Unit detective, he is considerably more competent; however, he is still prone to recklessness and is frequently berated by his partner, Shinko Kuroyanagi. When left on his own devices in 3, he acts unnecessarily aggressive and violent towards both his enemies and civilians.

After death-filing and being "overpowered" by Kosuke Kurumizawa, Shiro mellows out considerably and begins carefully planning out his actions. He gains an existential awareness of Kamui Uehara and his own past selves. He is still dangerous, however, and has to be talked down from this state by Kuroyanagi. Shiro has a vindictive attitude towards crime and Kamui, and feels the need to kill anyone who he believes to be Kamui, even after the events of The 25th Ward.
History
Backstory
Shiroyabu is the son of Format Kamui and a woman, presumably the source of his true name, Shimohira. He was presumably brought up in a controlled environment, and cloned many times to create stock bodies similar to those of the Eleven Children, if he is not in fact one of the Eleven himself. As a young man he lived in the country with a mother of unknown identity and three siblings. At some point he became obsessed with the Silver Case and Tetsugoro Kusabi, and sent requests to join the Heinous Crimes Unit. Eventually he was scouted for the police force in the wards.
Whiteout
In 2003 (in 25 and its completed counterpart 6), Shiroyabu had been hired for the Central Police Department in Ward 24. As one of his first jobs, Shiroyabu received orders to assassinate the final member of TRUMP: Joker. In doing so he encountered Akira in the Shelter, immediately confusing him for the Joker. Before he could shoot Akira (who, being mute, was unable to answer Shiro's accusations), Tetsugoro Kusabi appeared and shot Shiro in the left ear. Kusabi made Shiro work together with Akira to find the Joker.

After a complicated investigation, the two cornered the Joker at the Hachisuka Dome. When they went in to take him down, Shiro's memories began flowing backwards as the Joker prepared to kill himself. After the Joker was knocked to the floor, Shiro realized that the Joker was in fact one of his own stock bodies. The narrative abruptly cuts to Shiro himself apparently having been killed by Michiru Kosaka. Kusabi then hands Shiro off to Hatoba, who assigns him as Kuroyanagi's partner.
The 25th Ward
Between 2003 and 2005, Shiro worked for the 25th Ward Heinous Crimes Unit. He lost at least one partner, apparently having been paired up with other detectives when not working with Kuro. At some point in his police career, he also had a mentor-and-student relationship with Ryu Munakata, who taught him the secrets of death-filing.

By the time of 1, he was partnered with Sakaki, investigating the death of Milu Yuzuki in the Bayside TowerLand apartment complex. During this investigation, Sakaki was killed by one of the Postal Federation's deliverymen going berserk, and a bloody shootout ensued. Shiro, Kuro and new recruit Uehara also investigated the mysterious death of Yasushi Kamijo. After this, he was set off on his own by Kuro to investigate the truth behind Kosuke Kurumizawa. When left to his own devices, not only did he violently kill civilians and deliverymen alike, he was also targeted by the Okiai hitmen. He gradually spun further out of control while being simultaneously strung along a path by the hitmen that resulted in him death-filing and coming into a confrontation with Kurumizawa at the Alternative Batting Center.

Seemingly before this confrontation could take place, Shiro was shot in the head by Sumio Kodai, who encouraged him to battle Kurumizawa with everything he has. The results of the battle are ambiguous; Shiro believed that he had killed Kurumizawa, but Kurumizawa would appear later to say he only allowed himself to appear as if he was killed. Following this, Shiroyabu gained some of Kurumizawa's observation power for his own. Thanks to this Shiroyabu gained an awareness of his past life and the existence of his stock bodies. He began to see himself as an observer that keeps the balance by eliminating Kamui. Shiro disappeared from the Unit, and continued investigating Kurumizawa's actions, tracing them back to the mayor, Kenichiro Mikoshiba. He met with Hatoba at one of the mayor's rallies, and assured him that he wasn't going to kill the mayor and to give him more time to move freely. Later Shiro would confront Uehara and seemingly kill him, believing him to be Kamui. Shiro wandered the city, pondering the nature of Kamui and how to contact him. Using his powers to track Kamui's "point", Shiroyabu was led to the city hall, where he found the dead body of Mikoshiba. Kurumizawa revealed himself to Shiro, taunting him and discussing his new existence. After a chime sounds, which Kurumizawa claims is Kamui's "ringtone", he prepared to switch places with Shiroyabu, before exploding into particles. Kuroyanagi arrived and spoke to Shiroyabu, telling him to think for himself and that he is not like Kurumizawa. Kuro reminded Shiro that he is a detective, whose duty is to investigate in the name of justice. The two left to go back into the field.

black out
*No. 61, "Target Kuroyanagi's ears": Uehara stabs Kuro in the heart, and Shiro prepares to avenge her after killing Hatoba, Aoyama, and Akama. A white-haired Sumio Kodai appears and puts an end to the duel, with his presence stretching time.
*No. 83, "Kurumizawa appears in an illustration": Everyone is turned 2D by Kurumizawa. Shiroyabu is garish in 2D and doesn't look good. The group engage in a pay-to-win battle which destroys the 25th Ward.
*No. 87, "Kurumizawa appears in an anthropomorphic animal body": Kurumizawa appears with a monster suit and explodes. At the center he is covered in blood, and looks like Shiroyabu.
*No. 90, "Sakaki is pointing her gun at you": Shiro holds Sakaki after she is shot in the head by Uehara. She continues reappearing and dying over and over again, until she and Shiro both fade out of existence.

Travis Strikes Back
Shiroyabu appeared in #4: Modern Observation when Travis Touchdown visited the 0 Ward. Shiroyabu encountered Travis with a gun, accusing him of being Kamui. Travis quickly knocked Shiro out with his Suplex wrestling skills, and he was left to Chillko to take care of.
Romeo is a Dead Man
Shiroyabu appears on the ISS Last Night as an agent for the FBI's Space-Time division. He assists Romeo by selling various items.

During the end credits of the game, he is stated to "[sleep] inside the Space-Time Police servers in the form of data," indicating his existence as an Observer. The tesseract that other observers use, such as Uehara or Kurumizawa, is also present in his shop, further reinforcing this idea.

Behind the scenes
Shiro's nickname in the English version, "Jabroni", is a wrestling term based on "jobber", which describes a wrestler whose role is to deliberately lose matches. Shiro is indeed set up to lose to others both by the characters in the story (to Kurumizawa) as well as by the narrative itself (to Travis). His Japanese nickname, "Jaburo", is a more specific reference to the headquarters of the Earth Federation in the Gundam Universal Century setting. In the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime, Jaburo is where the mass-produced Gundams were first deployed.
*No. 28, "Find Shiroyabu in hiding": Uehara tries and fails to shoot Shiro, but is killed by Kuro and awakens in the white room again.
*No. 29, "Talk to Shiroyabu": Shiro threatens to kill Uehara and plunges him into endless darkness.
*No. 30, "Shiroyabu was invisible": Uehara uses observation to follow Shiro to Ward 24, where Shiro disappears.
*No. 31, "Is Shiroyabu alive?": Shiro and Uehara enter a portal to another crime-ridden time period, where Shiro shoots a dinosaur with a ray gun.
*No. 32, "Wonder whether Shiroyabu is alive or dead and fire one shot to check": Shiro battles Dark Shiroyabu. The two overlap to become Red Shiroyabu. Red Shiro kills Hatoba, then disappears as Kuro shoots at him. All HC Units throughout history join forces to process Red Shiroyabu.
*No. 33, "Shiroyabu executes Blue and Red": Shiro kills Aoyama and Akama, and is killed by Kuro. His final words are to go see his mother. Kuro meets a young woman in the suburbs, who gives her a key to an apartment where she finds Shiroyabu sleeping, and he wakes up.
*No. 34, "What's that red light shining around Shiroyabu?": Shiro emanates a red light which rewinds time, stopping the destruction of the 25th Ward.
*No. 44, "Sakaki stares expressionlessly in your direction": Sakaki reappears, which makes Shiro shaken. Shiro then executes Uehara.
*No. 45, "Sakaki looks cheerfully in your direction": Shiro cries and apologizes to Sakaki, and is swallowed by her body and mind. Uehara shoots at Sakaki to no effect, and Shiro whispers that he has a place to return to before disappearing.
*No. 46, "Sakaki is staring daggers in your direction": Shiro tries to kill Uehara, who flees to another world. There he meets a friendly female Shiroyabu, who invites him to dinner where Uehara dies of poisoning.

}}Tokio Morishima is the protagonist of the Placebo storyline in The Silver Case and The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, as well as a minor but important character in Flower, Sun, and Rain. He is a freelance investigative journalist initially tasked with investigating the infamous Kamui Uehara but soon finds himself immersed in the numerous conspiracies of Ward 24, Lospass Island and eventually Ward 25.

Appearance and Personality
Tokio is a rather odd man prone to bouts of complaining and laziness, but despite this, he is considered a quality journalist. He has an intense fixation with his pet turtle, Red, and is rather socially awkward, especially around women. His appearance in Transmitter shows him with spiky blonde hair, soft features wearing a leather jacket and cargo pants. This is inconsistent with his appearance in Placebo, which shows him with dark hair and sharper features, most likely as a byproduct of his skewed perspectives in Placebo's artwork - however, his appearance in Flower, Sun, and Rain seems to be consistent with his Transmitter design. In The 25th Ward, both his personality and appearance have changed considerably; he has grown a short stubble, wears a black muscle shirt and seems to have bulked up considerably, along with more sharper facial features. In addition, his personality is far more detached and sullen.

Tokio seems to think of himself as cool at first, but is often berated by other characters and has an unprofessional conduct with his client. At this time he also often acts out of self-interest, getting in touch with people for his own gain. As the series goes on, the experiences he goes through and his continually being used as a pawn by higher forces leave him progressively more and more depressed. However, he appears to have recovered somewhat by the time of 6, in which he acts as a mentor figure to Yuki Shimohira.

Tokio apparently feels compulsed to keep a diary of some sort at all times. At first it was the Morishima Memo, a text diary on his computer. During his stay on Lospass Island, he keeps another journal, one entry of which is published in The Lospass. In The 25th Ward, he posts on an online blog, but this is later taken over by Meru Yuzuki.

Tokio is subscribed to a few mailing services: Today's WORD, Weekly Lovers, and DNNET.

History
Childhood
Tokio is one of Kaoru Hachisuka's children and one of the first batch of Shelter Kids. Near the end of the procedures, he had an emotional outburst that caused the administration to wipe his memories and return him to normal society, where he was adopted by the Morishima family. Here, he grew up and began working as a police journalist for a magazine before later quitting and going freelance. According to his business card, he used to live and work in the real-life ward of Suginami before returning to Ward 24.
The Silver Case
Tokio receives an order from S. Inohana to report on Kamui Uehara. Over the course of 1999, Tokio tries to find information about Kamui as well as following the investigations of the Heinous Crimes Unit. He is assisted by his ex-girlfriend Erika Yukawa as well as other contacts on the internet. He soon encounters Akira at the Babylon Shopping Center in the middle of a traumatic experience, and associates him with that experience from then on. During the course of investigations, Tokio is threatened and spied on by the Bat. After just barely escaping the Bat with his life, Tokio flees his home, leaving Red in Erika's care. His actions during this time are unclear, but he runs into the HC Unit during their mission to execute Kamui. He also comes into possession of Kiyoshi Morikawa's notebook, and learns about the shelters. Tokio returns to his home near the end of 1999, now contending with numerous "lingering consciousnesses" in his head, which become magnified as a result of acquiring Uminosuke Hachisuka's silver eye. He tells Erika to continue taking care of Red as he will be heading away from the city for a while longer.

Flower, Sun and Rain
Following the events of The Silver Case, Tokio researches the creation of the silver eyes and discovers their origin. He heads to Lospass Island, arriving on May 2nd, 2001. Later, he meets Sumio Mondo on a boat connected to the caverns on Eleki Island. He explains what he discovered about the hyenas and the silver eye production, and also claims to be accidentally responsible for the problems with time. Tokio seems to be taking care of one of the hyenas at this time, which ends up being used by Elbow for mysterious purposes later on.

IMM Hospital
The 25th Ward
In The 25th Ward, following his memory removal, Tokio is noticeably more reserved and withdrawn, and seems to be almost unsure of himself in demeanor. Tokio is entrusted a mission from an unknown employer to research "what's going on in the 25th ward." Despite this, he still maintains his lifestyle of researching primarily through the internet, taking care of Red, and being mostly socially withdrawn. In the events of Placebo, Tokio becomes entangled in the mystery of finding out the secrets hidden behind the high-rise apartment complex where a mysterious amount of residents have been dying in rapid succession.

Through the high-rise apartment complex, Tokio discovers the background of the sex chat website Quarter's "Goddess," or, the most in-demand sex-chatter on the website. As he digs deeper into this mystery, he finds that Goddess is in fact three entities: Milu, Miru, and Meru, the latter two of which are in fact AI based on the personality and chatting habits of Milu.

WIP

Yuki
Years later in 2017, Tokio has long since regained his memories and become much more acquainted with his abilities as a medium. During December of that year, Tokio encounters a high school aged girl named Yuki Shimohira living in Hinashiro City. Yuki, like Tokio, is a medium. Tokio notes that Yuki's abilities are significantly stronger than his own, and so acts as a mentor for her in exorcising a spirit causing apparent suicides in a train station alongside Hiiragi.

Also by 2017, Tokio has seemingly entirely quit smoking cigarettes and now opts for an e-cigarette, or 'vape.'

Romeo is a Dead Man
Tokio sends Romeo various research documents, stating that he is "sent [there] for certain reasons." He has great respect for Romeo, and gives him more details about his quest that wouldn't be explained elsewhere, such as details about the three band members and how members of the Space-Time police are selected.
Trivia
* Throughout The Silver Case, Tokio Morishima shows to be inept when it comes with computers. Often asking for help from others or falling victim to virus attacks.

In YAMI, it is revealed that Tokio's laptop is not Y2K compliant and doesn't show the dates of newer emails as a result.
* When asked about a future Silver Case Continuation in Creator's File_#1 SUDA51: Episode 2 "Investigating The Silver Case" / "シルバー事件徹底解剖", it is stated by The Silver Case Co-writer Masahi Ooka that "while I haven't written him out properly, Tokio is dead." with ideas of him only appearing in spirit or as a "residual consciousness."
* In Misogi, it is heavily implied that Tokio has Dissociative Identity Disorder
As he digs deeper into this mystery, he finds that Goddess is in fact three entities: Milu, Miru, and Meru, the latter two of which are in fact AI based on the personality and chatting habits of Milu.

Romeo is a Dead Man
Tokio sends Romeo various research documents, stating that he is "sent [there] for certain reasons." He has great respect for Romeo, and gives him more details about his quest that wouldn't be explained elsewhere, such as the three band members and how members of the Space-Time police are selected.

Trivia
* Throughout The Silver Case, Tokio Morishima shows to be inept when it comes with computers. Often asking for help from others or falling victim to virus attacks.
